Presenting IGH: Green design is no picnic.

A friend from architecture school is now the Director of a prominent ‘green’ architecture/planning practice in India. We feel proud to bring you some of their work. IGH stands for Initiative for Green Habitat. This is just one of their recent projects, but it showcases how green design is an attitude-one that can permeate every aspect of our lives however small. Picnic table made from previously used wood packaging.

KidSpace: Me, Myself and NYPL Birds

We have found that writing as “we” is not natural. It is not that there are a bunch of people writing these posts. There is mostly just one person, with assistance from cooperative passers-by, professional colleagues, family, friends and occasionally the building super and neighborhood vet. So from here on, unless there are more that two persons who can claim authorship for these posts we are going to drop the “we” and show up as I. Much more personal that way….

So have you seen the new (when I say new, I mean about one year old at least) NYPL downtown. It’s a fabulous space for kids. Spacious and light, computers at the “right” height, bean bags, child friendly low/medium height bookshelves filled to the brim with kids books….ahh heaven! And then there are these birds in the window. Probably the result of one of the many Origami and other events the library offers for kids and adults downtown, during the week. But strung so well. Like a beacon of peace and harmony.

LightSpace: Never before seen

We walk by this street about 4 times each week. At least.
This is the FIRST time we saw this light wall. Its secure entry so pardon the reflections of the passers-by in the picture. See if you can catch the photographer in there somewhere!

KidSpace: A box for my stuff…

What would you do if you needed storage space for your knitting and for your kids toys? You would probably go to IKEA, Home Depot, or the Container Store and find a couple of bins to stash it all in-right? Not if you live in upstate NY and have Judith Frey as your relative! If you knew Judi, you would have her design and paint you one of her Judi Zuzu personalized toy boxes.

So much storage, such beautiful designs, hand painted, no-VOCs in paints, wood or adhesive, sustainable, eco-friendly construction and personalized-what more can you ask for?

30% off the toy boxes for the holidays, starting today? You got it!

LightSpace: Mercury Floating

Mercury floating or floating mercury best describes this light fixture we chanced upon recently. It is bizarre. We thought it was to be viewed from down below, being a ceiling fixture and all, but no. It looks just odd from down below. From the side it looks just passable. And the light reflecting off the shiny surface probably generates some artistic shadows somewhere but we were too blinded to notice.

Who designs these things? Probably someone famous.
Who specs these things? Probably someone famous as well.

Sigh.

LightSpace: Reflections

Every now and then we should think about the quality of our lives. Sound profound? Well hardly, if you find yourself making a trip to the hospital. No bad news though. But still, looking at scores of people thronging through the doors-sick, ailing, sometimes happy but mostly tired and sad. It makes one wonder….

We find that little glimmers of Light, like in the images below, make it worthwhile to go to a hospital. Where else would you see such subtle beauty?

Reflections1

This one is sunlight reflecting off one of the Sloan Kettering Buildings onto the chimney tower of the Kettering Labs on 68th street. Makes you wonder, doesn’t it?

KidSpace: Rothko but happier

Rothko Tile Page

Presumably everyone has heard of Mark Rothko. We were particularly attracted to his works early on in our explorations into art. Except that by that time he was famous and therefore unaffordable for the average small collector. We recently found an artist whose work suddenly prompted stirrings within–not felt since we saw Light Red over Black (1957) by Rothko at the Tate Modern several years ago.

Eileen R Miller’s art is strong and beautiful. She earned a BFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1979. She lives and paints from Wilmette, IL. She has exhibited at several places in Illinois and in New York. We found her at the Architectural Digest Home Design Show and loved her work.

Perfect piece of REAL ART for your little tyke’s room. If all goes well for Eileen, it may also serve as their college fund!
